Parade, ceremony scheduled for Palmerton Memorial Day

Palmerton’s Memorial Day parade is promising to be a heartfelt tribute from the Borough to those who have given their lives for the country.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, the procession will go down Delaware Avenue to the Borough Park, where a wreath will be placed at the Palmerton Area Veterans Memorial display. Palmerton Councilman and veteran Bill Gallagher said that there may be a rifle salute as well.From there, the parade will go up 5th Street, around Franklin, and gather at the bandstand in the park.Vietnam veteran Steve Vlossak will be the master of ceremonies, and Ray “Buttons” Carazo will be the featured speaker.Some young Palmerton residents will be contributing their time and effort to commemorate the lives of those lost in service.“I’m going to put a wreath in front of the borough hall, and I’m going to be at the opening ceremony,” Hunter Sell, 8, said. “Whoever served worked so hard to protect America.” Miss Poppy, Shannon Dougherty, will be placing wreaths at the borough hall and the memorial display as well.“Memorial Day, to me, means representing and respecting our veterans, and those who have served in war for us. It’s very important to me, and I’d just like to say thank you to everyone who has served our country,” said Dougherty, 12.Hunter Sell, 8, is the Legion mascot. He is proud to be the mascot in honor of his pappy's brother, who is featured on the monument because of his service in Vietnam.Carazo will also be presenting a free slideshow on the Vietnam War at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sokol Hall Club, 452 Lehigh Ave.The day is set to be a moving salute to those who served and sacrificed their lives for the preservation of the country’s liberties and beliefs.“This town is very patriotic, and recognizes the value of the veterans who have answered the call of their country, allowing us to be free,” Gallagher said.“They’ve come out and supported everything we’ve done, they’ve supported the flag, they’ve supported the Vietnam Wall. It’s amazing. This borough loves veterans.”
