209 road closure from JT-Nesquehoning next week

A road work project along Route 209 between Jim Thorpe and Nesquehoning will get underway next week.

Starting Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Carbon County Maintenance forces will perform base repair work on 209/East Catawissa Street between Route 93 and Route 903.

The work is anticipated to continue through Friday, though longer in the event of inclement weather, according to Ron Young, PennDOT spokesman.

Young said the road will be closed and detoured between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, while traffic will be detoured on Route 902 and Hemlock Drive/Beaver Run Drive/Beaver Street.

He said base repair, also known as full depth patching, is considered a permanent repair method.

Young said the technique involved excavating/milling in a large patching area up to 4 inches deep and then patching with bituminous material (blacktop).

“The US 209 work will be similar to the base repair work occurring this week on Packer Drive/West Main Street (Route 4008) and Brenkman Drive/Hudsondale Street (State Route 4010) in Packer Township and Weatherly Borough,” Young said.
