A look back: July 7, 1971

Officials of Weissport were commended by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources for their repair efforts in the vicinity of the Lehigh Canal in the borough.

G.H. McConnell, deputy secretary of engineering and construction for the state department, highly commended the borough leaders, especially Mayor Albert Lichty, on their accomplishments in the past several years.

McConnell praised the borough leaders for work in maintaining overgrowth along the downstream levees, patching of spalls along the concrete walls of the levee, repairing eroded areas along the embankment of the upstream canal block and repainting the project sign.
