Benefit to support area volunteer’s battle against cancer
A community organization invites people to support a benefit for one of their own as he battles Stage 4 lung cancer.
The all-day benefit with food, drinks, raffles, a dart tournament and live music afterward will be hosted Saturday by the East End Fire Company in Tamaqua for longtime member Joe Smarr.
A variety of food and drinks will be available all day, including french fries, coney and regular burgers, pierogies, haluski, roast beef, shredded chicken or turkey barbecue sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, chicken fingers, pizza, pasta and macaroni salads and hot dogs.
Plus, people can also purchase sweets, such as black bottom and upside-down pineapple cupcakes, brownies, cookies and mini peanut butter pies.
People can also support Smarr through a 50-50, chances for a basket of cheer and numerous other raffles in his fight against cancer.
Tara Stauffenberg, one of the organizers, said that Smarr, who was diagnosed in July, is always one of the first people to volunteer to help out with events, such as this.
“We wanted to do something for him during this hard time,” she said.
Not only does Smarr help with the fire company’s fundraisers but he is also a bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas — as he loves everything Christmas, Stauffenberg said.
“He is always there to support family and friends any way he can,” she said.
Smarr and his wife, Debbie Zupko, have been married for 44 years and have three sons, Derek, Dylan and Tyler, and two granddaughters, Vivian and Faith, which “light up their world,” Stauffenberg said.
A Tamaqua native, Smarr is an avid fan of the Las Vegas Raiders as well as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He also loves darts and listening to ’90s alternative rock.
The benefit with the dart tournament and live music was planned with Smarr in mind, Stauffenberg said.
The dart tourney already has 20 three-person teams signed up, and darts start flying at 10 a.m., organizers said.
Music as part of the OkJoeberfest Jam starts after the tournament with bands, Scratch Tape and Weezasis, kicking off around 7 p.m. There will be a $5 cover.
All proceeds from the benefit go directly to Smarr, whom organizers call a wonderful person who “would give the shirt off his back to help someone.”
