ESU ice hockey team suspended over hazing

East Stroudsburg University has canceled its men's ice hockey season in the midst of hazing allegations from two coaches about another.

"Hazing rituals and other alcohol-related issues were being implemented by the A team and their head coach, Andrew Nowicki," B-team volunteer coach Brian Divis said in an email which was sent to the Pocono Record by former B-team coach Dave Nufrio.Nowicki, who was arrested in 2009 in connection with a marijuana trafficking ring on ESU's campus and later two DUI charges in 2011 and 2013, "currently has no role with the ice hockey club," ESU director of university relations Brenda Friday said. "He resigned with the club in early December."But Nufrio and Divis allege that Nowicki is still involved with the program.Nowicki took over before the 2012 season for his father, Stephen, who ran the team before him.Divis and Nufrio say the university should have done a background check.Divis and Nufrio both said players made the coaches aware of excessive drinking and that "hazing, partying and drinking on buses, etc., started to become more frequent and more validated," Divis wrote.Nowicki isn't on the bench coaching, "but he is still involved and I told the school that," Divis said.ESU's Student Activity Association oversees the ice hockey club. The association's Executive Director Joseph Akob confirmed that university officials were investigating the allegations, but declined further comment.Distributed by Tribune Content Agency LLC
