Erosion, fire company funds discussed in Walker Township
In public comments at the Walker Township board of supervisors meeting Thursday, township resident Diane Krapf asked what had been done to address the erosion occurring in a culvert on Kettle Road.
Chad Felty of the road department has spread grass seed, but the area was sprayed with weed killer this past spring and the seed has not germinated.Dave Horst will examine the site this coming week.Krapf said she may take the matter to the conservation office if the township cannot remedy it.Art Valentine, a trustee of the Walker Township Fire Department, asked why the department is not receiving due funds to pay its bills.The township is responsible for funding one-third of the expenses related to housing the firetrucks.Supervisor Craig Wagner said the department should be given monies they are back owed.Chairman Bill McMullen recommended more discussion to identify why the funds were not being dispersed to the fire department.The possibility of raising the fire tax to help fund the department was mentioned.Township resident Larry Brensinger Jr. identified township digging past easements on Kettle Road. He does not want erosion on his property.Horst will inspect this site, as well.A push for the removal of a trailer located on Swamp Road raised the question of how much funding the township should reasonably allocate to the effort."The more we push it, the more we're spending," McMullen said.A letter has been sent to a relative who lives in Allentown and is in charge of the estate.Horst anticipates closing out paperwork for the 2015 road program in the coming week. A payment of $45,625 to Schuylkill Paving is pending.Three hundred tons of salt and 400 tons of anti-skid have been purchased in preparation for winter.A motion was passed to advertise the new zoning hearing ordinance.Repairs are being made to the township's Ford F350. The board has begun planning the purchase of a 2016 diesel truck through the COSTARS cooperative purchasing program.Felty said that, if the truck were ordered now, it would arrive no earlier than March.Brensinger recommended looking at a variety of dealerships, including Freightliner and International, before committing to a new vehicle purchase.In new business, the 2016 board of supervisors meeting dates were discussed and a 2016 budget meeting was tentatively scheduled for noon on Saturday.A lightning strike damaged several items at the township building including phones, a motherboard and a wireless router.Supervisor Leonard Ostergaard recommended installing a surge protector and lightning rods valued at $4,000.
