Lansford Borough may be closer to correcting a leak in the pool that has caused them to lose millions of gallons of water.
The borough's parks and recreation board has had two contractors look at the pool, and they are narrowing down the source of the leak.A firm from New Jersey pressure tested the pipes that carry water to the pool, and found that one or more of the pipes were unable to maintain pressure."That seems to be where the problem is," recreation board chairman Rose Mary Cannon said "We have to ascertain where the breaks are."They should know more when they get a full report from the contractor, which could occur next week. That contractor was hired after another hired by the board did not have the equipment to properly investigate the source of the leak. The board voted in August to hire Atlantic Leak Detection to investigate the leak at the cost of $5,000.They discovered some cracks in the deep end of the pool. However it was determined that they were not the source of the leaks.Cannon said even with the new contractor, the borough has spent less than $5,000 looking for the source."Hopefully before the weather gets too cold, we will have a definitive answer for council. The leak was discovered in the middle of the summer pool season. The Lansford Coaldale Joint Water Authority noticed abnormally high readings from the pool. They discovered that the pool was losing about 1.3 million gallons of water each month. The 360,000-gallon facility was last refurbished in 1984. It was originally built in 1944.
