Kunkletown woman sent to state prison on drug, other criminal counts
A Kunkletown woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday in Carbon County court on a drug count and other criminal charges she previously entered guilty pleas.
Jennifer Gongora, 32, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of 18 to 60 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of contraband into a prison. She also entered pleas to charges of default in required appearance, driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.
The default in appearance charge was filed when she failed to appear at the county prison on April 28, 2019, on charges she previously pleaded to. She was arrested on Aug. 7 by police on a warrant on that charge.
Gongora was arrested for the contraband charge on Nov. 25, 2017, when she reported to the county prison for a weekend sentence for DUI. During a routine search she was found with needles loaded with heroin. The DUI occurred on Oct. 24, 2017, along Spruce Hollow Road in Lower Towamensing Township. A driving under suspension count was also filed in that matter.
The drug possession charge stems from an Aug. 4, 2017, incident involving an ongoing investigation by the state Attorney General’s office and county drug task force in which heroin was being distributed.
She applied for the state Intermediate Punishment Program but was turned down because she has pending charges in Monroe and Northampton counties.
On the DUI charge she was fined $1,500 and had her license suspended for 18 months. On the suspension count she was sentenced to serve 45 to 90 days (but must serve the full 90 days) and pay a fine of $1,000. The jail terms run concurrent with the contraband charge. On the drug possession count she was fined $1,500.
Currently an inmate in the county prison, she was given credit for a total of 260 days already served.
