Slatington to host electronics recycling day

Slatington is once again hosting an Electronics Recycling Day from 9 a.m. to noon on May 30 at the borough garage at 550 W. Church St. The recycling day is open to borough residents only. Proof of residency is required.

Borough Manager Daniel Stevens said the event will be held outside in a drive-thru format.

“One car at a time will come through,” he said. “You’ll just wait your turn in line. It usually moves pretty fast.”

Several different types old or broken electronics and small appliances can be recycled free of charge. Some of these items include desktop and laptop computers, keyboards and mice, printers, fax machines, cellphones without the batteries, toner and ink cartridges, gaming systems, string Christmas lights, car batteries, bed frames and file cabinets.

One television or one computer monitor can be recycled for free. There is a fee for additional televisions and monitors, and they must be complete, nothing broken. The fee for 42-inch televisions or smaller is $35, larger is $55. CRT monitors (tube type) are $15 to recycle and $12 for LCD monitors.

Items with a $20 fee include: washers and dryers, dishwashers, stoves and floor copiers. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers are $25. Refrigerators and floor freezers are $30. And console stereos are $35.

Destruction services are also available. Hard drives and paper documents can be destroyed off site for $10 per drive or standard paper size box. A certificate of destruction is included.

The recycling fees can be paid by cash or check made payable to Responsible Recycling Services.
