Mom pleads in baby death 6-week-old infant was suffocated

A Carbon County woman pleaded guilty in the county court on Thursday in the death of her infant son.

Tory Lyn Schlier, 26, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 6-week-old son, Brayden Allen Cummings. The incident occurred on Oct. 17, 2014.The child suffocated while in bed with her.State police at Lehighton, who handled the investigation, said an autopsy revealed the child died of asphyxia while sleeping with Schlier. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.Lehighton police received the initial call at 8:58 a.m. for a baby found unconscious. The baby was taken to the Lehighton hospital where he was pronounced dead.Schlier told police she had fed the baby a bottle in her bed between 7:30 and 8 a.m. A blood test revealed that she had amphetamine, methamphetamine, alprazolam (Xanax), and methadone in her system. The baby had a prescription for methadone, which the mother told police was administered at 10 p.m. the day before.Schlier also admitted taking two bars of Xanax, which was not prescribed, on the afternoon of Oct. 16, and told police she was "high" when she administered the baby his prescribed dose.District Attorney Jean A. Engler told Judge Steven R. Serfass that Schlier had admitted using methamphetamine, she had no prescription, and was under the influence of controlled substances at the time.Schlier said little during the proceeding except to answer questions from Serfass concerning her rights. She admitted the facts read into the record by Engler were true.In a plea bargain a charge of endangering the welfare of a child was dropped.Serfass accepted the plea but deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report. The plea agreement calls for a state prison sentence to be imposed at the time of sentencing.
