Carbon County commissioners
The Carbon County Commissioners, on Thursday, discussed or acted on the following items:
• Approved the advertisement of finding of no significant impact/request for release of funds for the Family Promise Homeless Facility Acquisition.
Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that these are requirements to determine if the specific purpose of the use of Community Development Block Grant funds would have a negative impact and also serves as a notice to residents of a public comment period for the grant before funds are released. That public comment goes through the end of May. The state will then review comments and if not issues are found, than Family Promise could receive the funds by mid-June.
• Adopted an updated fiscal year 2020-21 state operating financial assistance resolution certifying $273,126 and matching funds of no less than $40,969 for Carbon County Community Transit/LANTA operations.
• Ratified a letter of support designating Lehighton Ambulance Association Inc. of Lehighton as the centralized coordinating entity for Carbon County for the naloxone distribution program for first responders. This is a renewal of support for the existing program.
• Approved a United States Department of Homeland Security pre-disaster mitigation grant agreement with the Pennsylvania Emergency management Agency in the amount of $45,000 to update the Carbon County Hazard Mitigation Plan. The county’s matching share is $15,000.
• Ratified an agreement with Gillen & Feliciano P.C. of Lehighton for services as special counsel to Children and Youth Services at a rate of $65 per hour, effective May 4.
• Ratified the termination agreement with Strubinger Law P.C. for professional legal services to Children and Youth Services, effective May 1.
• Commissioner Rocky Ahner recognized nurses as part of National Nurses Day, which was earlier this week. He thanked nurses for risking their lives and their family’s lives to help others.
• Lukasevich pointed out U.S. flag protocols and noted that some businesses lowered their U.S. flag recently after Gov. Tom Wolf ordered commonwealth flags to be lowered.
• Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein urged residents to support local fire departments in this time of need by sending donations to the local departments if they can. All fire departments in Carbon County are volunteer and depend on fundraisers to survive. The pandemic has forced many to lose out with the cancellation of fundraisers.
