RUNAWAY TRUCK Rig loses breaks on Route 93 outside of Nesquehoning, rolls over.
A trucker escaped serious injury Thursday afternoon after he lost control of his rig while traveling down Route 93 in Nesquehoning, rolling it across Route 209.
The incident occurred just after 1 p.m.According to Nesquehoning police officer Tim Wuttke, Robert Kitchen III of Bethlehem was driving his rig, owned by Kritsak Trucking of Allentown, southbound down Route 93 into the borough when for some reason, he lost his brakes and began to pick up speed.Wuttke reported that Kitchen said he was unable to stop or utilize the runaway truck ramp. As Kitchen neared the Route 209 intersection, he attempted to bear right, causing the rig's contents of steel beams to shift and roll the vehicle.It rolled once with Kitchen still inside before coming to rest in the dirt lot across the street, owned by Dennis Creitz, who operates Creitz Tune Up Service and Auto Sales at that location."It's not the first time this has happened but it's been awhile," Creitz said following the crash.The property's fence was ripped out of the ground during the incident and the asphalt of Route 209 sustained large divots along with scrape marks across both lanes of traffic.Scanner reports stated that Kitchen was able to free himself from the rig and was found lying on the road when help arrived.No other vehicles were impacted by the truck during the crash.Kitchen was taken to St. Luke's Hospital-Coaldale campus with minor injuries.Nesquehoning police are investigating.Nesquehoning, New Columbus and Jim Thorpe fire departments were on scene as well as Lehighton Ambulance, Jim Thorpe police and Nesquehoning and Rush Township fire police.Zenier Towing of Hazleton removed the rig, which is being inspected by Pennsylvania State Police to see if a mechanical failure occurred.Wuttke said no charges have been filed against Kitchen at this time but police are waiting for results of a blood test, as well as state police's inspection report to complete the investigation.Nesquehoning police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the department at 570-669-9111.
