Motorists had to deal with the powdery snow as part of their work commute this morning.
The snow was expected to taper off, with the area expected to see between 1 to 3 inches before potential snow squalls return later this afternoon. The snow, combined with subfreezing temperatures, resulted in wet, slippery road conditions. Some roads were slushy with several crashes reported in the Times News area earlier this morning.A driver escaped serious injury at 7 a.m. in a crash along Route 895 in East Brunswick Township after the vehicle was traveling west, left the road, and hit a utility pole.Crashes were also reported on Route 209 between Jim Thorpe and Nesquehoning, on Interchange Road in Franklin Township, and Route 903 in Penn Forest Township.Paul Walker, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said a push of colder air was expected to make its way through later today, meaning any wet surfaces could turn icy.Wind chill values are expected to be as low as zero.Walker said the cold weather is expected to continue over the weekend, with highs only in the upper 20s, before returning to near-freezing by Monday.Sunday night single-digit temperatures are expected.Though early, Walker said there is the potential for another storm Monday night into Tuesday. Right now forecasts are calling for snow to continue through the day Tuesday."It has the potential to be a major snowstorm here, not sure of where the storm will form and strength of the storm," Walker said."We do think there is potential at least for a plowable snow Monday night into Tuesday."After an unseasonably warm February, Walker said the colder temperatures are expected to continue for about the next 10 to 14 days.
