Summer concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce presents its 11th Annual Summer Concert Series beginning this Thursday. All events to be held on the platform of the Tamaqua Train Station. Concerts will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays throughout the summer months.The first act to take the stage will be local folk/Americana musician Jay Smar on June 1. His appearance is being sponsored by the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau.Other scheduled events are: June 8 - Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer, blues; June 15 - Cajun Outlaws, sponsored by Heisler's Dairy Bar; June 29 - Six to Midnight, rock, sponsored by Tom's Auto Body and Marine; July 13 - It takes Two, top 40s and classics, sponsored by Cal's Tire and Auto Services; July 27 - Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats, sponsored by the Tamaqua Station Restaurant.A project of the Tamaqua Area Chamber's Marketing Committee, concerts are provided in part with funding from the Schuylkill County Council For the Arts as well as the generosity of sponsors. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and provided the inspirational reading "Keep Our Nation in Thy Care."The meeting included a memorial service, honoring four deceased members: Shirey Shellhamer, Robert Wehenmeyer, Shirley Mooney and Gloria McHale.Darlene Skasko and Joan Wall were added to the sick list and Sandy Scott was welcomed back after her absence.Upcoming events include: June 14, farm market voucher day at the Tamaqua Salvation Army.The meeting was followed by a picnic.The group is open to anyone 55 or older.Meetings are held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.AuditionsThe Tamaqua Area Community Theatre will hold auditions for its next production, "Our Town," from 6-8 p.m. Fridayand from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdayat the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St. Callbacks will be held on Sunday. Anyone, 13 and older, planning to audition should come prepared to read a monologue. Monologues will be provided to anyone who doesn't bring their own."Our Town" is a three-act play, written by Thornton Wilder, set in the fictional small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. The story takes place between the years 1901 and 1913.The production is made possible through an arrangement with Samuel French Inc.The theater group's current production, "Avenue Q," will be presented at 7 p.m. June 9 and at 2 and 7 p.m. on June 10 at the art center.For more information, call 570-668-1192.Calvary ECThe Rev. Phillip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. All 2017 graduates will be honored and Mackenzie Werez, summer missionary, will share the work of CEF.Sunday school for all ages is at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the evening service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and will focus on Genesis 23.A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 7.
