Fire destroys mobile home

A Lower Towamensing Township family has been displaced from their mobile home after an attempt to thaw a frozen pipe with a heating device went awry.

The fire in the 1400 block of Wintergreen Road broke out shortly before 11 a.m. Monday. When firefighters arrived, the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames.Bill George, Aquashicola Volunteer Fire Department fire chief, said the fire started as a result of an attempt to thaw out a frozen pipe in the basement."They were thawing a frozen pipe with some type of heater," George said. "It caught some insulation, cobwebs, on fire in a crawl space, and they couldn't get in."George said various factors played a role in hampering firefighters attempts to thwart the fire."Because of the distance, time of day, weather, there was really nothing we were able to do to save the mobile home," he said. High winds helped the fire to spread through the home.Constance Muthard shared the home with her husband, their son, grandson and his pregnant wife. A cat and dog also managed to get out safely.George said the Red Cross was called to assist the family.Trachsville Fire Company, Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company, and Palmerton Ambulance assisted at the scene.
