Supper today

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is hosting its next free community supper today, beginning at 5 p.m.

Dancing tonight

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will host line dancing from 6-9 p.m. tonight.

Pleasant Valley

PVE Spring Title 1 and PAC are slated to meet from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, and the Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Next week, PVH has two things happening back to back on April 29: The Academic Fair will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and the Pleasant Valley High School Band Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Zion worship

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, at 1919 Route 209, holds worship services at 5 p.m. Saturdays, as well as Sundays at 8 a.m. (also via Zoom), and 10:30 a.m. (also via Facebook Live.)

A simple prerecorded spoken service is available on Facebook.

Sunday School is at 9:15 a.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

In addition to worship services, Zion hosts AA meeting at the church every Wednesday at noon and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge. All meetings are confidential.

The parish hall is also available to rent for events. Call the church office at 570-992-6988 for more information.

And this past Saturday, Zion hosted the farmers market. That activity will continue for some time. Email brodheadsvillefarmersmarket@gmail.com for details and an application.

Envirothon set

The Monroe County High School Envirothon, hosted by the Monroe County Conservation District and supported by the Kettle Creek Environmental Fund, will be held on Friday.

Five Monroe County schools will be competing: Pleasant Valley High School; East Stroudsburg Area High School — South; Pocono Mountain East High School; Pocono Mountain West High School; and Evergreen Community Charter School.

The event is a an outdoor, hands-on competition that tests the knowledge of natural history and environmental issues covering a variety of topics.

The schedule: registration from 8:30-8:45 a.m.; competition from 9:10 a.m. to noon; and the awards at 1 p.m.

Chicken barbecue

Effort UMC is hosting its annual chicken barbecue dinner Saturday.

Serving time is 3-6:30 p.m. Preorders are being accepted.

Adult dinners features a half-chicken, baked potato, corn, applesauce or coleslaw, roll and dessert. For children (ages 3-11) dinner features a quarter-chicken, baked potato, corn, applesauce or coleslaw, roll and dessert.

Consignment sale

Pocono Old-Tyme Farm Equipment Association is holding its 30th annual Consignment Sale on Saturday at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert, rain or shine.

No items will be accepted on the day of the event.

The sale will take place behind the fairgrounds, entering from the County Park Road entrance.

The event opens at 9 a.m. and will include farm tractors, equipment, lawn and garden equipment, hay, straw, grain, lumber and more.

Grocery bingo

Operation: Touch of Home is hosting a Grocery Bingo at the Chestnuthill Park on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. The event will include a tricky tray, door prizes, etc.

Blood drive

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, is hosting a Red Cross blood drive from 1-6 p.m. Tuesday in the social hall at 646 Fairground Road.

Donors are welcome in this project.

Seed exchange

The Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville, has a free seed exchange. Folks are asked to limit selections to what will be planted this season and to four packs per family per day (one per variety.)

At the end of the season, collect the seeds (where possible) from flowers and veggies and return (them) to the WPCL.

SFRC open

The Supplemental Food Resource Center food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Origami corner

The Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville, has an origami corner. Instructions and paper “are always available on the Circulation information tower.”

Flea market

Effort UMC’s Women’s Group is holding a spring flea market on from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2.

PVEN yard sale

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is holding its semiannual yard sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3. No early birds.

All proceeds support PVEN’S Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, Diaper Pantry and Menstrual Hygiene Pantry.

Those entities have assisted folks in need for the month of March as follows: Food Pantry — 270 families, 778 individuals; Clothing Closet — 69 families, 198 individuals; Diaper Pantry — 120 families; and Menstrual Hygiene Pantry, 180 individuals.

Current needs for the different pantries include: Food Pantry — canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned pasta, cereal, and cat and dog food; Clothing Closet — bras and sports bras, cleaning products, blankets, comforters and sheets, and towels and wash cloths; Diaper Pantry — baby formula and baby food, baby toiletries, bladder protector pads and adult-sized pull ups.

Shoot and raffle

Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club has announced its next block shoot and meat raffle. The 12-gauge shotgun only event is set for May 3, starting at 11 a.m.

The public is welcome at the event, which is at the club home at 122 Gun Club Lane, Saylorsburg.

Voter sign-up

State Rep. Jack Rader reminds Pennsylvanians who are not already registered to vote but wish to participate in the May 19 primary election should be sure to register no later than May 4.

Day camps set

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers summer day camps. Campers should choose one week. The camps are:

• Get in Touch with Nature for ages 7-10 — June 22-26, July 6-10 or Aug. 3-7.

• Adventure Camp for ages 11-13 — July 6-10, Aug. 3 -7 or Aug. 17-21.

Camps are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with early care and late pickup available for an additional fee.

Kettle Creek

Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is hosting an event on May 16 at the center.

It aims to explore the colorful world of flowers and enjoy the beauty blooming all around us. Walk the trails to find flowers and learn what makes each one special.

Summer plans?

The Monroe County Conservation District and Monroe County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs is looking for teens 14 and older who are interested in the Monroe County Conservation Camp, sponsored by the district and the clubs.

The camp is in session from July 18 through July 25 and open to all teens, 14 through this year’s high school graduates. The camp takes place at Stony Acres, a 119-acre wildlife sanctuary/recreational facility owned by the East Stroudsburg University Student Activity Association.

The week includes stream and pond study; trapshooting and firearm safety; bird banding; archery; confidence/ropes course; and bass and fly fishing.

It also features a two-day overnight canoe trip on the Delaware River.
