Lansford moves forward with grant for Brimble wall

Lansford Borough Council on Wednesday accepted a state grant for more than $300,000 to repair a crumbling retaining wall that threatens a road and home.

The award of the Multimodal Transportation Funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority was announced last month.

The borough will be able to add the $313,000 grant to Community Development Block Grant funds it put aside for the project.

Last year, Carbon County, which oversaw the bidding process due to the use of CDBG funding, rejected the lone bid of $398,105 to repair the wall, because the project came much higher than expected.

At the time, the borough had about $90,000 in CDBG funds for the project.

The stacked stone and concrete wall supports Brimble Alley between West Ridge Street and Snyder Avenue. A narrow sidewalk separates the wall from a home at 362 Snyder Ave. Pieces of the failing wall have been falling into the home’s yard and onto the sidewalk.

Resident Mary Soberick asked about the funding, and whether the borough would be receiving the money or the county.

Council President Bruce Markovich explained that the $313,000 is a state grant, but the county is retaining the lead on the project with the CDBG grant funds and will put out the bids.

“If any bids come in over $403,000, we’re responsible for anything past that amount,” he said.
