Inmate charged with assaulting jail officers

An inmate faces felony assault and other charges after attempting to choke a deputy warden and assaulting officers at the Carbon County prison last month.

Ryan Nelson, 24, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner, aggravated harassment, terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment, and District Judge Beth Dodson set bail at $50,000.

According to court papers, Nelson became loud and agitated while speaking to medical staff at the prison on Feb. 21, and a corrections officer attempted to calm him down.

Nelson got louder and yelled at her to get out of the room, and additional officers were called. Assistant deputy warden Dan Rimbey attempted to calm him down, and Nelson told him to get out also, court papers said.

Rimbey attempted to get Nelson on his feet. Nelson became violent attempting to shoulder check him, and Rimbey took him to the ground, attempting to control Nelson, court papers said.

Nelson put both hands on Rimbey’s neck, attempting to choke him and spit at him and another corrections officer, court papers said.

Nelson continued to kick and shoulder check officers as they attempted to remove him from the medical unit, and he was taken to the ground again, court papers said.

Nelson then threatened Rimbey, saying that he knew where he lived and was going to shoot up his house, court papers said. He also made comments regarding Rimbey’s children, arrest papers said.

Nelson, who was interviewed on Feb. 27, told county detectives that he was upset, and that Rimbey and other officers slammed him against a wall and took him to the floor, court papers said.

Nelson denied the threats against Rimbey, but did said he was going to mess him up because he was mad, court papers said.

Medical staff corroborated Rimbey’s and officers’ version of what happened.
