Local roundup (results from March 15)

The Marian baseball and Palmerton softball teams both opened their seasons with shutout victories on Friday.

BASEBALL

CMVT-Marian

Brian Hinkle and Mike Gelatko combined on a one-hit shutout as Marian opened its season with an 11-0 non-league victory over Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech.

Hinkle tossed four shutout frames, striking out four, while Gelatko fanned one in his one inning of work.

Hinkle also collected a pair of hits and scored three runs for the Colts, who led 6-0 after two innings. The winners also received two hits, two RBIs and a pair of runs from Dylan Zullo.

Marian’s Cole DeFrancisco and Lachlan Segedy both added a hit and two RBIs, while Gelatko knocked in two runs. DeFrancisco’s hit was a triple.

N’western-Freedom

Freedom jumped out to an early lead and held on to post a 4-2 non-league victory over Northwestern.

Alex Suarez had two hits, one a double, and an RBI for the Patriots, who led 4-0 after three innings.

The Tigers (0-1) received a pair of hits and an RBI from Josh Farber.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Lehighton

Carly Gaffney tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight as Palmerton breezed to a 10-0 non-league victory over Lehighton.

Sydney Frantz led a potent Bombers’ offense with a home run, three singles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Also coming up big were Megan Matsko (single, double, triple, three RBIs); Hailey Delgado (single, double, two runs scored, two RBIs); Madison Green (single, two runs scored) and Hailey Barry (single, run scored, RBI).

Maggie Pagotto and Madyson Bergdahl had the Indians’ hits.

Ex. Education-Jim Thorpe

Mara Levins pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14 to help Jim Thorpe open the season with a 5-4 non-league victory over Executive Education.

Levins, who walked three, also helped her own cause by delivering an RBI double during a four-run fifth inning.

Oleksa McAndrew had two hits and scored a run for the Olympians, while Melina Schwartz added a hit and a run and Madison Schwartz stole two bases and scored a run.

BOYS TENNIS

Pleasant Valley-Becahi

Bethlehem Catholic took three of four singles matches to post a 4-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears’ No. 1 singles player, John Hargrave, won in straight sets, as did PV’s double teams of Chris Lanier and Roman Steuer, and Aaron Rehrig and Jens Hansen.

The loss was PV’s first this season, dropping it to 2-1.
