Cardinals rout Pleasant Vy. girls

Pleasant Valley’s struggles continued in a 55-21 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference loss to Pocono Mountain East on Friday.

The Bears found open shots, but failed to convert them throughout the game.

“Tonight, we had really good open shots, but unfortunately nothing was falling, Pleasant Valley head coach Corinne Morris said. “But I’m proud of our girls for not giving up, staying respectful and playing hard.

“We were also hurt by the fact that we had a couple of players out, We have some injuries and sickness, so the numbers of available subs on our bench is very short.”

Annalisa Lanigan and Ryan Rosenberg each had four points to lead Pleasant Valley in scoring during a game in which the Bears’ offense failed to find its groove. Pleasant Valley did hit three three-pointers in the contest - one each from Katelyn Honadel, Rylan Knapp and Alexis Polazzo.

The game was a complete turnaround from the earlier meeting between the teams this season that Pleasant Valley won 36-16.

In the rematch, Pocono Mountain East’s Farrah Shaheen made sure things were going to be different as she single-handedly outscored the Bears by tossing in 29 points.

“We were able to watch some film from last time and adjust,” Pocono Mountain East head coach Helena Gemmell said. “The girls came out and played really well. They were making good passes and getting a lot of points in transition. That’s what really won it today.”

Pocono Mountain East opened the game with a 10-3 run and led by nine at halftime. The Cardinals then dominated play after intermission to turn the contest in a blowout.

“It was nice to put up points like we did tonight. We had been having a hard time on offense this season, so it was good to get this time of scoring,” Gemmell said. “I loved that we went go deep on the bench and got points from everybody.”

Both teams have struggled this seasons with Pocono Mountain East improving to 3-13 overall and 2-10 in EPC play. Pleasant Valley falls to 2-16 overall and 2-13 in the league.

Despite the team’s struggles, Morris was still proud of her team for playing hard.

“It’s been hard because it seems like we keep losing key players to sickness and injuries,” she said. “We have a couple players now out for the season because of injuries. But we are still playing and fighting hard and not giving up.”

EAST WINS ... Pocono Mountain East’s other victories came against Moravian Academy and East Stroudsburg North. “We got a lot of young girls playing, and a lot of talent in that group, said Gemmel. “They’re getting used to this league and the intensity of all of the games. We’re coming along and making a lot of progress from where we started.”
