Trainer’s pin helps Bombers top NL

Wednesday night’s wrestling meet between Colonial League rivals Northern Lehigh and Palmerton came to the 189-pound match.

Palmerton junior Jameson Trainer faced Northern Lehigh sophomore Grady Newhard in a thrilling back-and-forth match between the two wrestlers. Trainer was able to pin Newhard at five minutes and 11 seconds to give Palmerton the lead for good.

“We had a couple of matches that we knew were going to be up in the air, and that was one of them,” Palmerton head coach Justin Petersen said. “He made it close and interesting, but he finished strong. It’s always good to get a team win.

“We had guys that didn’t do as well as they wanted to, but we had other guys that picked them up.”

Trainer was happy he was able to get the key victory.

“I knew I was going to go in there, and it was going to be a hard fight,” Trainer said. “We all came out strong, and we knew they we’re going to be a good team.”

Palmerton had six pins, and finished the match strong.

Northern Lehigh got things going with a victory from Cody Mazzocca in the 121-pound match. Mason Rothrock also recorded a pin for the Bulldogs in the 139-pound bout.

“Cody came out of the gates and got us the fall,” Northern Lehigh head coach Scott Snyder said. “He did the job as expected.

“With Mason, he was a little bit upset coming off the mat because he almost got pinned during the match. I talked to him and said that was only because you were doing your job getting the pin. You knew you needed to get a fall there and ultimately did.”

EVERYONE CONTRIBUTING ... Petersen talked about the contributions his team has been getting this season from multiple wrestlers. “We’ve been pulling out wins like this consistently, and it’s been different guys contributing that way each and every night,” he said. “It’s not just one or two different guys that we’re always counting on. We can count on anybody in the lineup, depending on the matchup. It was nice to see.”

BULLDOG YOUTH ... Northern Lehigh has a young team that has been suffering through some growing pains. Snyder has been going through the ups-and-downs of the season. “It’s just been a lot of learning curves for the younger guys, just as we anticipated,” Snyder said. “It can be frustrating at times as a coach, but at the end of the day, you look back and there’s a lot of youth in our lineup, and they have a lot of time in the future going forward. It just gets tough at times; you just have to remind yourself where we’re at.”
