Carbon contracts for specialty court coordinator

Carbon County officials have decided to contract out a position to help oversee specialty courts after no qualified candidates applied for the job.

Last week, the board of commissioners approved an agreement with the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission to provide treatment court coordinator services for 15 hours per week from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The cost is $6,180.

President Judge Roger Nanovic said that Judge Joseph Matika, the judge who oversees the treatment courts in Carbon County, has wanted this for a while but was not able to find a suitable candidate.

The county salary board created the position for the treatment court earlier this year.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said in an email last week that the decision to move to contract the position was because Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol already play an integral role in the drug treatment court and had the reach to be able to provide the services that are needed to make sure the courts remain beneficial.

The county salary board last week also abolished the position in the county.
