Tamaqua awarded veterans honor

The Veterans Day National Committee has selected Tamaqua as a regional site for a Veterans Day commemoration.

The borough is just one of 66 places across the nation and one of two in Pennsylvania chosen for the honor.

The committee selects sites that carry on fitting tributes to America’s heroes.

The application for the regional site consideration was submitted by the American Legion C.H. Berry Post 173 in Tamaqua.

The post was advised of the selection in an Oct. 5 letter from B. Sue Fulton, assistant secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Sites are selected based on community involvement, regional impact and continuity, according to the committee and the VA.

In its application for the award, the Tamaqua American Legion noted that its annual Veterans Day Parade receives quite a bit of support from the community. It estimated that approximately 50 groups, ranging from fire departments, youth organizations, other veterans’ groups and elected officials, join the 1.5-mile parade through Tamaqua’s downtown.

The Post holds a ceremony honoring veterans in its yard and invites the public to its post home to learn more about its history and what it does.

Also in its application, it noted that it recently purchased American flags for display throughout the downtown and other busy areas during all parades.

As an approved site, the Legion receives a supply of official Veterans Day posters, military ceremonial support from the U.S. Department of Defense when available, and a certificate from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for inclusion in the official program.
