NY murder suspect in Carbon jail

A New York man charged after a crash on Interstate 80 in Carbon County is now facing charges in a double homicide in Rotterdam, New York.

Anthony J. Lewis Jr., 31, was charged by state police at Fern Ridge after a crash at 11:13 a.m. July 6.

Carbon County charges included possessing a small amount of marijuana, an expired license, speeding and other traffic violations, according to court records.

Court records say he refused to talk to police and was denied bail.

While in custody, Carbon officials found out a warrant was issued in the stabbing deaths of his mother, Cathy Guillaume, 65, and his stepfather, Robert Guillaume, 73. He lived with the couple in Rotterdam, and was driving Robert Guillaume’s black Buick Encore when he crashed, police said.

On July 6, police were called to the one-vehicle rollover, with possible fire, at mile marker 281.5 on Interstate 80 in Kidder Township. Police said the car had hit the center median. The passenger side front and rear doors were open but no one was in the car.

Court papers say they found Lewis walking down the road and that when he saw police he ran into the woods, throwing items as he ran. Police discovered two small bags of pills and a paper towel with six burned marijuana stubs.

He was taken into custody, but refused to give police his identity.

Police said Lewis had seat belt injuries and cuts on his hands and arms as if he were cut by a sharp instrument. He was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley for treatment and charged by police on July 9.

Because the car was registered to Robert Guillaume on Fern Avenue in Rotterdam, New York, police contacted New York officials. They learned that Robert and Cathy’s Guillaume’s daughter Kara Stealy asked for a welfare check on July 7.

Police found Robert’s body on the landing, covered with a blanket, and Cathy’s body on the bed in a second-floor bedroom. She had stab wounds and police said there was a half a pair of scissors which appeared to have blood on them. They also said there was blood throughout the home.

The New York criminal complaint says Lewis stabbed the couple “multiple times with sharp instruments” sometime between July 4 and July 5.

Stealy told police her parents would not give permission to Lewis to use the car and would leave the keys with her when they went away to ensure he did not drive. He did not have a valid license, she said.

Police said they were called to the home on July 1 for a criminal mischief incident, but did not detail the incident in the Lewis paperwork. New York officials did confirm the person in custody in Carbon was Lewis.

He pleaded guilty last Wednesday to the drug charge in front of district Judge Joseph J. Homanko Sr.

Police, charging him as a fugitive from justice, said he is awaiting extradition.

Carbon County Detective Jack Soberick said when the first-degree murder charges were filed in New York, the Pennsylvania charges were reduced to expedite his return to New York.

Soberick went to the prison to interview Lewis to see if he would waive extradition. “He did not open his eyes, nor did he speak,” Soberick said. His lack o response is taken as a refusal so he notified New York authorities that they must get a warrant to compel his return.

In addition to multiple New York investigators, Rotterdam Police said they worked with Pennsylvania State Police, Luzerne County detectives and Plain Township police departments.

The investigation is ongoing.
