Fire temporarily closes Marketplace

A two-alarm structure fire at the Slatington Marketplace on Friday morning was electrical in nature, officials said.

Chief Tito Burgos of Emerald Star Hose #1 Volunteer Fire Company in Washington Township said the building along Route 873 was cleared in around two hours.

“It looks like it was one of the older pipes that leads to an electrical panel,” Burgos said of the origin. “That’s about all we can speculate at this point. It’s contained and under investigation. The fire marshal will take a look at it.”

The call, which came in just before 9 a.m., went to a second-alarm, Burgos said, in large part due to the challenge of locating the fire.

“There were no active flames, but the building is a pretty good size so just finding where things were happening took some time,” he said. “We had to put 300 foot of hose on the truck just to get to it. The first couple guys went in with extinguishers. The building kept filling up with smoke, but once PP&L shut the power off, that smoke started to go away and cleared things up.”

The fire was in the northern part of the building, which Burgos said had some vendors.

“I’m not sure exactly how much of that section was utilized,” he said.

Power was shut off to the building to help firefighters get things under control. Burgos said he couldn’t put a time frame on when the marketplace would be back in full operation.

“That’s really up to the owners and their electrician,” he said. “I know it’s time sensitive for them because they have some refrigeration they’re dealing with.”

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Route 873 was closed for several hours in both directions.
