Turnpike crashes

State police at the Pocono barracks were busy in the past week responding to six separate incidents on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, including four in Carbon County. The other two were in Washington Township, near Slatington.

• A man from Philadelphia was clocked at 96 mph in a 70 mph zone and police found him to be in possession of marijuana.

Police said Michael Rich, 24, was stopped at mile marker 68.6 in a 2008 Hyundai Sante Fe at 4:21 p.m. July 12 and was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

• The other incident in Washington Township happened at 6:46 p.m. July 7 at mile marker 70.7. Police said Eden D. Helfrich, 31, of Andreas, was driving a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that left the lane of travel and struck a metal guide rail end with its passenger’s side. She was uninjured.

• A crash happened at 9:54 a.m. July 8 at mile marker 82.9 in Penn Forest Township after traffic had slowed down due to a heavy volume in the area.

Police said Alexis S. Holbrook, 62, of North Plainfield, New Jersey, failed to stop in time and her 2023 Hyundai Tucson struck the rear of a 2015 Acura operated by Patrick G. Miller, 42, of Conshohocken, who had come to a complete stop. Police said a 2020 Lincoln Continental operated by Roland R. Charles, 70, of Pennsdale, struck the rear of the Tucson.

Police said charges of following too closely are pending against Holbrook and Charles. No one was injured in the pileup.

• Two crashes happened the next day, July 9, one in Franklin Township and the other in Penn Forest Township.

At mile marker 78.5 in Franklin, a 2015 Lexus operated by James W. Parson, 52, of Newtown, traveled off the roadway onto the berm and struck a guide rail with its front end at 2:38 p.m. The car then traveled back across the two lanes and struck a barrier with its driver’s side. Parsons and a passenger, Bonnie M. Parsons, 62, were uninjured.

A second vehicle was involved in the incident. It was a 2023 Honda operated by Nancy M. Bernstein, 60, of Lakeview, although the police synopsis did not contain any information about its involvement except to say she was uninjured as well.

A similar incident happened at 5:41 p.m. July 9 at mile marker 81.8 in Penn Forest. Police said a 2011 BMW operated by Edward A. Saunders, 20, of Allentown, struck a barrier, traveled across the travel lane onto the right berm and struck a guide rail. Both Saunders and a passenger, Laquana Bunnell, 2, also of Allentown, escaped injuries.

The fourth incident in Carbon County took place at 11:30 a.m. July 10 at mile marker 75.7 in Franklin Township.

Police said a 2016 Nissan Rogue operated by Mateo I. Miranda, 19, of Chesterbrook, left its travel lane and struck the Exit 74 traffic sign. He was cited for the incident.
