Tamaqua studio plans movie shoot next month

A Tamaqua-based film studio plans to begin shooting a full-length movie next month in the borough.

And already, Outhouse Production Films has a star-studded cast of characters lined up for “Dream Devil.”

“I am so happy to talk about this,” said Robert Morgalo, the Berks County actor and filmmaker behind plans to build a $30 million film studio complex in the borough

From OPF’s office in downtown Tamaqua, Morgalo rattled off the names of a dozen actors who’ve signed on to the movie. Others are needed for acting and behind the scene work, and can learn more about opportunities during a town hall meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday from The Perla Building.

Morgalo noted that Nicholas Tuturro will fill the lead role in “Dream Devil,” and is known for his work on the television series “Blue Bloods” and “NYPD Blue,” and movies like Longest Yard” with Adam Sandler.

The movie tells the fantasy tale of a middle-aged man (played by Tuturro) who has lost everything due to a string of bad luck and bad decisions. His dead-end life is turned upside down when he finds a strange medallion and discovers all that glitters isn’t gold.

Additional actors who have committed to the production include Lillo Brancato, who starred in “A Bronx Tale” and “Crimson Tide,”; Gonzalo Menendez, who was featured in “Breaking Bad,” and Nestor Serrano, who has a host of credits under his belt.

“I’ve known Nestor Serrano for all his work, but I didn’t realize just how extensive his work is,” Morgalo said. “This guy has worked with (Robert) De Niro, Al Pacino, just everybody.”

Morgalo said more are needed for “Dream Devil,” which was adapted from a book of the same name by Cambodian author Im Ung. Ung will be the executive producer.

“We are trying to find some local actors so we can give them an opportunity,” he said.

There are opportunities for “behind the camera” work, too.

“We need people for set production. We need people who might be good at building,” he said. “We are looking for people who want to help in wardrobe, catering, transportation and that kind of stuff. I’d rather go local than bring in from outside.”

Those who are interested in learning more are invited to the Thursday event at 105 W. Broad St. but must sign up at https://tinyurl.com/2s4hyszp.

“They can find out about the movie, they can see how they can get involved, they can come talk to us and we can tell them what is happening,” Morgalo explained.

Ozz Gomez, producer, said the upcoming film is just the tip of the iceberg for OPF.

“This is just a small seed that is going to branch out,” Gomez said. “There will be opportunities, however, at this moment we are rolling with what we have. It really is a challenge but also a growth because we want to be able to hire as many people who are local. We also want to train people so they can choose whether they want to work in a production here in Tamaqua or go wherever they choose. Of course, we want them to stay in Tamaqua.”

OPF is hoping to obtain about 50 acres of land in Tamaqua to construct sound stages, catering facility, hotel, day care and offices.
