Lehighton Band to perform Thursday

The Lehighton Band, under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, will present an early Flag Day concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

A free will offering to support the band will be accepted.

The concert will open with a special arrangement of the “Star Spangled Banner” complete with a fanfare arranged by Bill Moffitt.

The opening march is “Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa. The overture for the evening is the contemporary piece entitled “Eiger” by James Swearingen, which tells the story of a young man’s quest to climb the mountain that claimed his father’s life.

Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America” is the next piece. Also arranged by Swearingen, it contains “This is the Army,” “Mr. Jones,” “Give Me Your Tired,” “Your Poor,” “This is a Great Country” and “God Bless America.”

“Afterlife” by Rossano Galante will be performed next. The music for this piece was donated to the band by the Lehighton Boys’ and Girls’ Band in memory of Paul R. Smith, who directed the band for nearly 50 years.

Bill Moffit’s “America the Beautiful” is next, followed by “Carnegie Anthem,” which pays tribute to Carnegie Hall, an American Institution.

An original March entitled “Rings of Fire” by Frank Erickson will be followed by Eric Osterling’s “Cakewalk for Band” that takes us back to a simpler time.

The rousing patriotic piece “American Flourish” by Robert W. Smith will be followed by James Curnow’s “Amber Waves of Grain,” a symphonic Rhapsody on America the Beautiful.

The band will close with yet another Moffitt arrangement of a march entitled “March America.”

Free bottled water will be provided by First Presbyterian Church in Lehighton for those attending.

In the event of rain the concert will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Third and Mahoning streets.
