Piano recital

Nate Sassoon, organist at Effort UMC, will be performing some of his own compositions and that of Handel, Mozart, and McDowellon from 6 to 8 tonight in New York at the Opera America’s National Opera Center.

Confirmation held

Effort UMC added 15 to its membership during its Confirmation Sunday’s Profession of Faith ceremony this past Sunday.

PVEN needs

Needs for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network include juice, pasta, cereal and condiments for food pantry.

The Clothing Closet has need for shaving cream, razors, body wash and toothbrushes; cleaning supplies and paper towels, and laundry detergent; sheets, towels and blankets; and baby food and baby wipes.

The pantry is located at 2336 Rt. 29, Sciota.

This Saturday, the Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.

QV celebrations

Quiet Valley continues its Farm Animal Frolic and plant sale this weekend.

The 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Co. G will be there for a Civil War encampment.

Moving-up day

This Sunday, Effort UMC will hold a Sunday school moving-up ceremony at the 11 a.m. service.

Blood drive

St. Matthew’s UCC is hosting a blood drive with Miller-Keystone Blood Center from 2 to 7 p.m., June 1.

Fireman’s festival

The four West End fire companies (Polk, Kunkletown, Blue Ridge and West End) are together hosting a West End Fireman’s Festival at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert on June 1, 2 and 3.

Thursday and Friday hours are: gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday’s entertainment is Timewhys from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday is Cramer Brothers from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, the gates open at 3 p.m. with the entertainment being Chris Eckert from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the Brian Dean Moore Band from 6 to 9 p.m., with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Magician Mark Mysterrio will be on the band shell at 6 p.m.

There will be construction equipment, military equipment, township road equipment, fire trucks, ambulances, helicopters and more on display.

There is a charge for parking and attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs.

Food and drink, including ice cream, hot dogs, burgers, fries and pizza, as well as beverages, will be available.

Sponsors are needed and craft vendors are wanted.

Full moon paddle

On June 3, at 8 p.m., folks can join the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center and enjoy a unique and leisurely paddle around the remote Brady’s Lake under the full moon. Folks will listen and look for animals that become active when the light fades to night. Participants can supply their own kayak or canoe, paddle, life jacket and flashlight or headlamp or specify rental needs at time of registration. (Our limited kayak rentals include paddle, life jacket and whistle).

Meet at Brady’s Lake parking lot in SGL#127 by 8 p.m. This event may be canceled if inclement weather.

Preregistration is required and limited, call 570-629-3061. Suggested donation of $15. If equipment is needed, it must be reserved at time of registration.

Pizza sale

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, is holding a ready-to-bake pizza sale. Orders must be placed by June 4, by calling 570-629-4309 and leaving one’s name, phone number and number of pizzas wanted.

Pick up is June 9 at the church between 4 and 5 p.m.

Ross Historical

The Ross Township Historical Society Museum will be open for visitors on June 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is located in the Ross Township Municipal Hall annex, 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg. Featured will be LeRoy Hawk, a longtime Ross Township resident who will have very old photos of people and places throughout the township.

This is not a presentation, but an opportunity to speak with someone with a remarkable memory and interesting reminisces of “how things used to be.”

All are welcome; there is no charge for admission.

PVEN summer lunch

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s free summer lunches are available for children ages 18 and under as of June 5 and through Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Chestnuthill Park, Pavilion 1, on Rt. 715, Brodheadsville.

Vendors wanted

Middlecreek Christian Church, Kresgeville, is hosting an outdoor flea market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on June 10.

Vendors can reserve a space by calling 570-629-4066 and getting other details, such as costs, by leaving one’s name and phone number where one can be reached. Space rental costs must be paid by June 1.

All donations will go to the church’s benevolence fund.

Conservation camp

Monroe County Conservation District and Monroe County Federation of Sportsmen’s clubs are sponsoring a Conservation Camp in July 15 through July 22.

Conservation Camp is open to students 14 years old to this year’s high school graduates and provides hands-on classroom and field instruction covering aspects of natural resource conservation and management.

Strawberries & cars

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is offering a 3-prong celebration on Father’s Day, June 18.

That celebration includes a strawberry festival, a picnic, and the 19th annual car show, as well as a worship service at 10 a.m.

Breakfast sandwiches are served from 8 to 10 a.m. at the food stand.

The food stand will close during the worship service which begins at 10 a.m., reopening after the service is over and offering foods such as barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, assorted beverages and strawberries, ice cream and shortcake.

There will be entertainment in two places, including the Brian Dean Moore Band from noon to 3 p.m. by the pavilion and D.J. EAZY E! from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the field.

Car registration begins at 8 a.m. and continues through noon.

Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m.

There will be various activities throughout the day, including kids games, kids cakewalk, and the fish pond.

A portion of the car show proceeds will be donated to the Monroe and Carbon County Meals on Wheels.

Community weekend

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Saylorsburg, will kickoff a new summer program on June 23, offering families a weekend of activity.

The church will offer free Fourth Friday Family Fun Flicks again, followed on Saturday by Vacation Bible School from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 5-12 and worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The VBS program will include a Bible story, songs, crafts, a snack and other activities.

Families are welcome to join the Fourth Friday evenings, starting this year starting with a showing of E.T.-the Extra Terrestrial, an award-winning movie of compassion, inclusion, acceptance and understanding.

Hot dogs and popcorn will be available, just like in the movie theaters. The Fourth Friday movie begins at dusk - approximates 8:25 p.m. Showings will be on the lawn behind the St. Peter’s building (924 Rt. 115). Recommended is bringing a lawn chair or blanket.

Movie rain-dates are the following Friday.

The church sign on Rt. 115 will provide info on the next showing.

The VBS program and the worship service are open to all children in the community.

The church invites folks to come as a family unit and enjoy the time together.

Art-in-the-Park

Chestnuthill Township’s Parks & Recreation department is collaborating with Pocono Mountain Art Group to host an Art-in-the-Park revival from noon to4 p.m., on June 24. This is open to the public. Currently being accepting are artist, artisan, and crafter applications.
