O’Connor adds 3 more Schuylkill golds

ORWIGSBURG - The shining moments continued for one of the greatest female track stars the Schuylkill League has produced in a long time.

Those moments also continued for her team.

Jim Thorpe’s Kalia O’Connor finished off a memorable two days of competition on the campus of Blue Mountain High School by whizzing her way to three more gold medals on Wednesday after capturing one on Tuesday.

O’Connor’s incredible meet was part of a huge haul by the Jim Thorpe girls team which finished the two-day meet with nine total golds.

While O’Connor was the central figure in the girls competition, the Olympian boys team also left its mark.

They may not have been as noticeable as O’Connor’s accomplishments, but their result were similar - golden.

Thorpe, which will be competing one more year in the Schuylkill League before heading to the Colonial, took the team title rather handily. The Olympians put up 130 1/2 points over the two-day event, easily topping runner-up Nativity’s 95.

Ryan Bailor, who earned a gold medal on Day 1 in the 3200, posted another first Wednesday for Thorpe when he crossed the finish line in 4:24.36 to win the 1600.

The senior was the only JT boy to capture individual gold at the meet, but the Olympians’ depth proved to be the difference in the team competition as 12 of Bailor’s teammate also registered points.

“We had great results … We had tired legs … We knew it was going to be a grind,” said Jim Thorpe head coach Frank Miller of the boys title. “We will get prepared for next week (District 11 meet) ... We’ll taper down, and get ready to rock and roll.”

Winning two relays and earning a second in the other one also added to Thorpe’s team total. After a victory in the 3200 relay on Tuesday, the Olympians struck gold again in the 400 relay as Andrew Coolbaugh, Andrew Warner, Joshua Louk and Zeeshan Issifu combined for a time of 43.94 to edge Nativity.

O’Connor is golden

“She’s one of the most gifted athletes I ever coached,” Miller would say about his standout sprinter. “She is always looking to improve. She is such a dedicated and hard worker, which makes her even more special.”

O’Connor’s first gold came when she held off Pine Grove’s fast-charging Viktoriya Luckenbach in the 100.

After posting a career (and all-time Times News area) best in the prelims with an 11.97, O’Connor crossed the line in 12.01 during the finals to hold off Luckenbach (12.22).

The Olympian junior then made it three golds and in three individual events during the meet when she raced to a first-place finish in the 200 meters. After coasting to a time of 27.89 during Tuesday’s busy day of qualifying, O’Connor blew the lid off the field with a blistering 24.64 time - setting another meet record in the process. The closer runner to O’Connor was once again Pine Grove’s Luckenbach with a 25.35.

O’Connor capped her day as part of Jim Thorpe’s winning 1600 meter relay team, joining of Nicole Carroll, Aubrey Bonner and Ehlauna Penny. The Olympian foursome posted a time of 4;13.66 - over four seconds better than runner-up Pottsville.

Despite coming into Wednesday’s events as the favorite in both of her individual races, O’Connor said she took nothing for granted.

“Last night, I was thinking I needed to fix a few things,” said O’Connor when thinking back to her qualifying races. “I looked at footage when I got here today. I always look at three things to try and improve on ... my start, my drive and my arms.”

Two other Jim Thorpe girls captured individual firsts.

Carroll added to her 1600 meter relay win with a gold medal in the 800, edging teammate Bonner. Carroll had a winning time of 2:26.14, while Bonner was second at 2:27.54.

Celia Rodriguez-Gonzalez made it two gold in two days, capturing the 1600 meters in 5:31.74. She won the 3200 meters on Tuesday.

Despite the huge meet from O’Connor and multiple other golds from her teammates, Jim Thorpe was edged by Blue Mountain in the team competition,154-153.

“We’ve been working hard all season, trying to do our best,” said O’Connor about a small (21 girls), but talented Olympians contingent. “We are good for each other, we motivate each other and push one and other to get better.”

More area gold

Tamaqua’s Martin Griffin captured the boys triple jump with a leap of 42-9.75 - his second gold medal of the two-day meet after he took the long jump on Tuesday

Griffin’s performance was even more impressive considering he wasn’t 100 percent physically coming into the meet.

“He has had a back issue and shin splints,” Tamaqua coach Jim McCabe pointed out. “But he was worked on it and it allowed him to compete.

The win was a pleasant surprise for Griffin.

“I was just trying to better my PR, but my jumps felt really good,” Griffin said. “I really wasn’t expecting to get the gold today.”

Marian had a pair of gold medal performers. In the girls meet, Fatikha Tikhtova finished first in the high jump with a leap of 5-3. In the boys meet, Jesse Rodino won the discus with a throw of 140-3 - more than five feet better than the runner-up in the event.

BOYS TEAM RACE … In addition to the Jim Thorpe’s winning performance in the boys meet, other local teams and their finish were: Tamaqua (fifth place, 64 points); Marian (seventh, 52); Panther Valley (10th, 28); Lehighton (12th,14); and Weatherly (14th, 3).

GIRLS TEAM RACE … Other local girls teams and their finishes were: Lehhighton (third place, 61 points); Marian (6th, 52); Tamaqua (8th, 32); Panther Valley (14th, 7); Weatherly (15th, 2).

OLD GUARD … Some familiar faces - who have been part of the Schuylkill League meet for decades - could be found working at Blue Mountain. Kudos to track officials Len Czech, Phil Humm and Bernie Forgotch for their dedication to the sport.
