A trio of Lehighton area men, employees of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, saved the lives of two Allentown boys yesterday when they plunged into a deep quarry near Allentown to rescue the boys who had fallen through a coating of ice.

William P. Beck, 38, and Louis Geiger, 64, both of Lehighton, and Paul T. Whiteman, 55, of Weissport, were credited with the heroic acts.

They were on a train about a mile north of Tilghman Street when they saw one of the boys go under. Beck plunged into the water and pulled out the boy, handing him over to Whiteman, before the second boy fell through the ice. Whiteman dove into the water to retrieve the boy, handing him to Beck. Geiger applied artificial respiration to the first boy to save him after his lungs filled with water.
