Fred W. Manning of Lehighton, owner of the Monk Fur Company in Jim Thorpe, has been recognized in the Congressional Record as the Mauch Chunk Historical Society’s 1984 Citizen of the Year.

That recognition came in the form of remarks by U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, D-11th District, that were inserted in the record of the first session of the 99th Congress.

“Day in and day out, people like Fred Manning make contributions to the fabric of this nation which are not recognized nationally, but nevertheless their role is important to our national betterment,” the congressman said.
