MMI Preparatory School: An Independent, Immersive Education

PAID CONTENT | sponsored by MMI Preparatory School

MMI Preparatory School welcomes prospective students and their families to Exploration Day on Saturday, January 28.

During the event, families can tour the campus, meet the faculty, staff and current students, and learn about the admissions process, curriculum, and activities.

Entrance evaluations will also be given on Exploration Day to help determine where students are academically prior to admission. They are also administered by appointment if a student cannot attend the event, depending on class availability.

These evaluations are used as benchmarks to assess students’ math and English skills.

To sign up for January’s Exploration Day, parents and guardians can visit the registration page. Remember to ask us about our $2,000 Early Enrollment Grant.

MMI also offers need-based tuition assistance so an MMI education can be affordable for anyone who’s interested.

Families can also schedule a private tour by calling (570) 636-1108 Ext. 136 or emailing mhosier@mmiprep.org.

MMI Standards

For 143 years, MMI has served Northeastern Pennsylvania families, providing a powerful combination of a rigorous curriculum, expansive extracurricular activities, impactful character education, and close-knit athletic teams.

Of its 24 full-time faculty members, 20 are teachers with Master’s degrees; its class sizes are small (with 16 students per class on average), and so is its family of 205 hard-working students.

But MMI’s students and faculty aren’t numbers-they’re valued individuals. Everyone on campus is provided the support they need to grow on a personal level and develop a sense of belonging to a century-old community of learners.

MMI: A Brief History

From the start, MMI has been committed to educating the promising minds of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Here’s a brief timeline of the storied institution:

In May of 1879, Eckley B. Coxe-a coal industry leader-opened the Industrial School for Miners and Mechanics to fulfill a need for more advanced technical education in the region. Students typically graduated to careers as certified miners, foremen, and superintendents. But, some students continued at universities.

After the original campus was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1888, Coxe moved the campus and changed its name to the Mining and Mechanical Institute of Freeland. But, when he died suddenly in 1895, Sophia G. Coxe, his widow, took the helm.

As the 1900s marched on, so did Sophia-she grew the campus facilities, invited more students, and opened a day school specifically committed to the college preparatory curriculum. The program was successful from the beginning, sending local men to regional and national colleges. The “Angel of the Anthracite” subsidized tuition, rendering the program accessible to more than just wealthy families.

In 1970, the school began admitting young women, and MMI Preparatory School became what it is today-an interdisciplinary institution committed to excellence that honored and valued regional traditions.

It’s hard to sum up the 143-year history of MMI in just a few paragraphs-you can learn more about its lineage online.

Academics and The MMI Curriculum

MMI combines three powerful tactics to prepare students for the demands of university education:

1. A traditional, challenging, and rigorous educational curriculum

2. Advanced instructional methods practiced by highly qualified teachers

3. A wide variety of extracurricular and co-curricular activities

It offers educational opportunities for students from sixth to twelfth grade and imbues them with the tenacity and drive to succeed in higher education from day one. In middle school, students are encouraged to develop ambition; in high school, students set individual goals and assume greater responsibility for their own success.

MMI challenges students and teaches them how to overcome those challenges with hard work, time management, and critical thinking.

Athletics

MMI understands the importance of athletics, too-its athletic department and sports teams play an integral role in its interdisciplinary framework and support the physical, moral, and emotional development of its students.

MMI offers five sports teams for middle school students:

Baseball

Boys’ basketball

Girls’ basketball

Soccer

Softball

As students progress to MMI’s Upper School, their opportunities for athletic participation expand. The Upper School sports teams include:

Baseball

Boys’ basketball

Girls’ basketball

Soccer

Boys’ tennis

Girls’ tennis

Cross Country

Softball

Golf

Girls’ volleyball

Cheerleading

Student character is one of the foundations of excellence at MMI-the athletic program focuses on character development through competition and promotes respect, leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity.

Extracurricular Activities at MMI

Extracurricular activities are critical to a well-rounded education-and that’s why they have a place among MMI’s four pillars:

Academics

Athletics

Service

Activities

Students can take part in two types of clubs:

1. After-school clubs, which are often dedicated to training for academic competitions

2. In-school clubs, which promote fun and engagement after a week of hard work

MMI’s clubs are wide-ranging, and each is supervised by a faculty member. A non-exhaustive list of student clubs includes:

Mock Trial

Envirothon

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS)

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Bowling

Yearbook

Model Trains

Lego!

Chess

Drama

Chorus and Instrument Ensemble

Additionally, students may submit works to MMI’s annual Student Literary Magazine-a collection of visual art, prose, poetry, photography, and more.
