Man at fatal fire scene had self-inflicted gunshot wound

West Penn Township Police confirmed that the man found outside a home where a Wednesday evening fire claimed the lives of two firefighters died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police identified the man as Christopher Kammerdiener, who lived at the 1121 Clamtown Rd. residence. He was found deceased in the rear of the property and pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m.

Township police noted that they are conducting interviews.

“We are working closely with the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal and ATF fire marshal,” police said in a release to media Monday afternoon.

The incident remains an active investigation. Police said all evidence has been collected and will be processed in the coming weeks. They do not expect to immediately release further details.

New Tripoli firefighters Zachary Paris, 36, and Marvin Gruber, 59, died while responding to the fire. They were pulled from the burning home and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners campus in Coaldale, where they were pronounced dead.

The Lehigh County coroner said Friday that the men died of asphyxia and thermal injuries from the house fire. Both were trapped in the burning building.
