Lehighton OKs proposed budget with no tax hike

Lehighton residents won’t see a tax increase next year.

Borough council, on a 6-0 vote Monday, agreed to advertise the 2023 preliminary budget with no tax increase.

“The goal was to keep spending as level as I could,” Borough Manager Steve Travers said.

Travers said that the difference in revenue went up $307,000, while total expenditures went up $180,000.

“I kept everything pretty equal from 2022 to 2023,” he said.

Travers suggested that council look to move $200,000 from the borough’s Light & Power fund to the general fund, which he said would not effect the overall cost.

“I went to every department head,” he said. “They all were really understanding there’s wants and there’s needs; the needs were the priority.”

Councilwoman Lisa Perry said she was fine if they could make the budget work without the $200,000 transfer.

Councilman Ryan Saunders agreed and added he preferred to eliminate the $200,000 transfer.

Council President Grant Hunsicker added, “I’m not for raising taxes.”

Ultimately, council decided to advertise next year’s preliminary budget with no tax increase, along with no $200,000 transfer.

Afterward, Travers said the borough will advertise the budget’s availability, but is required to wait 10 days for review.

He said council will look to hold a meeting later this month for final budget approval.

Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.
