Photographer documents rare glimpse of Northern Lights

Ever since I was a child I have always found myself looking to the heavens.

Hearing the news that we had a very good chance in Pennsylvania of seeing the Northern Lights on Friday, May 10 definitely inspired me to go that night.

Driving from Palmerton to the Broad Mountain, my excitement and anticipation grew. I have had this experience on my bucket list for so long.

I love colorful skies and that is why sunrises and sunsets always draw me in. Now the chance to see the black of night colored by the Aurora Borealis was a definite must.

Nature is amazing and there was no guarantee that I was going to be able to watch the colors dance in the Northern sky, but I had to try. I was already telling myself that whatever I was fortunate enough to experience was going to be a blessing and I’d be thankful.

Upon finding the spot that Steve Miller suggested on the Broad Mountain, I could see light colors of purple, pink, and green with my naked eye. Now bursting with childlike excitement and curiosity I grabbed my camera and fired the first shot. Seeing the image in the viewfinder was elating!

Watching the subtle colors dance before me; I quickly grabbed the tripod and got the camera ready for the show. Yes there were clouds and they muted the intensity, but the magic was still happening and I was part of that moment.

Taking an image with night mode on my cellphone I quickly posted so anyone who was on social media would know to look up. Many people have this on their bucket list and with my post I was hoping some who wanted to could see it.

The colors and intensity changed while photographing and I was so thankful for the opportunity to be experiencing it. If more clouds and fog wouldn’t have rolled in I probably would have stayed and continued to watch the show until just before dawn. With the adrenaline running through me, tiredness didn’t exist.

I love looking at life through the camera lens and doing so for this light show did not disappoint. A camera allows the colors to be seen easier and this was an experience I will never forget.
