Carbon man admits fleeing police in stolen vehicle

A Carbon County man admitted in the county court on Tuesday to leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle and endangering police and many residents in the process.

Douglas Eardley Brown, 21, of Nesquehoning, pleaded guilty to felony counts of fleeing or attempting to elude police and receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of recklessly endangering another person.

Brown was arrested on May 8 by Weatherly police who attempted to stop him for motor vehicle code violations. Brown then led police on a high-speed chase in which police said he put officers and many of the public in danger.

Brown was finally stopped and taken into custody. It was learned that the vehicle, which was a 2012 BMW and with Tennessee plates, was stolen out of New York City and was wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting.

Defense counsel Alexandria J. Crouthamel said her client has not been charged in connection with any incidents in New York.

Assistant District Attorney Brian B. Gazo, prosecutor in the case, asked the court to impose a prison term higher than the low end of the standard range, which is six to 12 months up to 10 years.

Brown is an inmate in the county prison on the charges.

Judge Joseph J. Matika, who accepted the pleas, deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
