Local roundup: Results from Sept. 28

The Jim Thorpe volleyball team picked up another impressive victory on Wednesday.

Jim Thorpe’s Jordan Remmel posted a victory in a Schuylkill League cross country meet.

VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-Lehighton

Jim Thorpe continued its undefeated season with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 Schuylkill League win against Lehighton.

Maggy Hallihan had 27 assists, 10 aces, five digs and two kills for the Olympians (12-0), while Brooke Mitzen added 12 kills and four aces and Priscilla Patton recorded eight kills. Olivia Calcano (12 digs) and Leah Figura (10 digs) both played solid defense, with Figura also adding four kills. Brianna Snisky and Kelsey Patton played strong at the net, with Snisky recording six blocks and Patton two. Patton added four kills, and Snisky two.

Haley Ginder had 10 kills for the Indians (4-9). Lorah Thomas added three kills and five blocks in the loss. Mia Snyder put up 19 assists, and Lyla Kershner had seven digs for Lehighton.

Pleasant Valley-Nazareth

Nazareth swept Pleasant Valley 25-15, 25-23, 25-11 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match.

Lyla Arfanella paced the Blue Eagles (8-3, 8-3 EPC) with 14 kills, six digs and three aces, while Hailey Wanko added eight kills, nine digs and five aces.

Lexi Womack led the Bears (7-6, 7-6) with seven kills, 11 digs, one ace and one block, while Nora Jones contributed four kills and eight digs. Brianna Bruckman added 10 assists and five digs, Jackie James recorded five digs, two kills and one assist, and Hannah Akob registered three kills and one dig in the loss.

BOYS SOCCER

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Angel Arroyo’s goal with 1:41 left in overtime lifted North Schuylkill to a 4-3 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders (4-8, 4-5 SL) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, as Jathan Krall, Cooper Ansbach and Wyatt Steigerwalt all posted goals for the locals. Jacob Schlier had two assists, while Jesse Gormley also had an assist.

The Spartans got an own goal from the hosts in the first half, while Brady Welker went on to tie things up in the second half with two goals.

Jonathan Ulicny grabbed nine saves for Tamaqua, while Khristian Onuschak ended up with 11 saves for the Spartans.

North Schuylkill improves to 4-8 (1-8).

Weatherly-Lourdes

Layth Kanafani’s two goals and three assists highlighted Lourdes’ commanding 6-0 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

The Red Raiders also got a score from Andrew Nguyen.

Weatherly slips to 1-10 overall (1-7 SL), while Lourdes improves to 6-5-2 (5-3-1).

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe

Ryan Mundy scored six goals, and Blue Mountain cruised to a 7-1 Schuylkill League victory over host Jim Thorpe.

The Blue Eagles remain unbeaten in league play with an 8-0 mark in Division I play. Shawn Hertzog capped the scoring on the night with a score.

Ivan Turczeniuk accounted for the Olympians’ score with a second-half goal.

Cael Heaney made three saves for Jim Thorpe, while Colton Leibold finished with four saves for Blue Mountain.

FIELD HOCKEY

Catasauqua-No. Lehigh

Catasauqua edged Northern Lehigh for a 2-1 Colonial League victory.

Sarah Hanzarik posted the Bulldogs’ lone score, while Daisy Richards recorded 12 saves on the day.

Northern Lehigh falls to 0-12 overall (0-10 CL), while Catty jumps to 2-10 (2-9).

GIRLS SOCCER

PM East-Pleasant Valley

Pocono Mountain East posted a 2-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Ella Muir scored the lone goal for the Bears (7-6-1). Briana Palmieri assisted Muir’s goal.

Pleasant Valley had 30 shots on goal.

Jim Thorpe-Lehighton-

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Jim Thorpe’s Jordan Remmel ran to a first-place finish in a Schuylkill League meet in Orwigsburg.

Remmel crossed the finish line in first place in a time of 18:10 for the Olympians.

The Tamaqua boys and Jim Thorpe girls both posted 2-1 marks on the day.

The Blue Raiders’ Anthony Marchetti and the Indians’ Owen Serfass finished in third and fifth place, respectively.

Jim Thorpe’s Nicole Carroll posted a second-place finish on the girls side. Meanwhile, the Blue Raiders’ Samantha Plasha and the Olympians’ Gabby Cinicola earned fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.

Pottsville posted a 4-3 win over Tamaqua.

The Raiders (2-9) swept both doubles’ matches, as Megan Oswald and Brooke Williams paired up for a win in No. 1 doubles, while August Stinson and Jenelle Fernandez took care of their Tide opponents at No. 2 doubles.

Williams also scored the lone singles win for Tamaqua.
