Turnpike truck hits, injures worker

A Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission safety truck assisting at the scene of a crash Tuesday night struck one of the drivers involved in the incident.

According to state police, a dump truck, whose operator had failed to lower the dump body after delivering asphalt to a nearby construction project, struck a bridge near the southbound turnpike 77.2 mile marker in Franklin Township at 8:18 p.m.

After the dump body struck the bridge, it struck the center concrete barrier and then deflected across both southbound lanes. The driver was ejected from the truck and came to rest in the left lane of I-476 South, while the truck continued approximately one-tenth of a mile off of the road and into a field.

The Turnpike Commission safety truck struck the dump truck driver as the driver was helping to clean debris at the site.

The dump truck driver was transported to St Luke’s University Health Network Hospital in Bethlehem for treatment of injuries. The driver suffered moderate injuries, but is expected to recover, according to police.

No other information about the driver was released. The Grange Road overpass was inspected and rendered safe, police added. The road was reopened around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
