Eldred bridge slated for replacement

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is planning to replace the Eldred Township bridge that takes Kunkletown Road over Princess Run in 2024.

The bridge is located between Fiddletown Road and Kleintop Lane in Kunkletown. That section will be closed during bridge replacement.

The existing structure is a 41-foot-long single-span rolled steel I-beam bridge, supported on stone masonry abutment stems and integral wing walls built in 1937. The existing deck consists of reinforced concrete with an approximately 2½-inch bituminous overlay. The bridge has an out-to-out width of 24 feet, 9½ inches and a curb-to-curb width of 22 feet, 4 inches.

Princess Run is a tributary to Buckwha Creek, which runs parallel to the south side of Kunkletown Road.

The structure is rated in poor condition and is currently posted with a 16-ton weight restriction.

Kunkletown Road has a posted speed limit of 45 mph both to the east and the west of the bridge. The bridge is located on a short horizontal tangent just between two horizontal curves. At the intersection with Fiddletown Road approximately 400 feet west of the bridge, there is a posted advisory speed of 30 mph facing eastbound traffic for the series of existing horizontal curves before and after the structure.

The new bridge will be a single span, composite steel I-beam bridge.

PennDOT invites community members to provide public input for the project.
