Pocono garden club to present forestry talk May 10

The Pocono Garden Club will hold a Mother’s Day Tea with a presentation on Mira Lloyd Dock, mother of the Pennsylvania School of Forestry and PA Urban Conservation, on May 10 at 1 p.m.

The meeting will be held in the Monroe County Conservation District building, 8050 Running Valley Road, Bartonsville.

Club Vice President Linda Gerkensmeyer will present the program on Dock, (1853-1945), an amazing conservationist, botanist and tireless member of the PA State Forestry Commission.

She fought hard for women’s rights and conservation in the Keystone State and nationwide.

In addition to the talk, the group will also have its monthly floral arrangement.

This month’s floral arrangement should be a parallel design titled “Red, White and Parade.” No flags are permitted.

Entries are also encouraged in the monthly horticulture exhibit: a choice of a branch from a blooming shrub not to exceed 25 inches, or a tulip. Either should be submitted in a clean, clear glass container.

A flowering houseplant in bloom may be submitted to the houseplant exhibit.

A Mother’s Day Tea with refreshments, discussion and a short business meeting will follow.

The club is gearing up for the post-pandemic return of its annual flower show and plant sale.

The event, “A Magical Kingdom, Disney in Flowers,” will be held July 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a new location this year, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 158 Fish Hill Road, Tannersville.
