Walnutport adopt-a-tree program continues

Fifty-seven adopted trees will light up the Walnutport Borough Park through Christmas.

The community turned out Saturday night to see the trees lit for the first time.

The Walnutport Recreation Committee hosted the tree lighting as its adopt-a-tree program enters its fifth year.

“COVID couldn’t keep us down last year, and this year was a bit bigger,” said Jennifer Wentz of the Walnutport Recreation Committee.

Businesses, organizations and families all decorated trees. Decorations ranged from holiday themes to memorials for lost loved ones.

Theory Ingles put Philadelphia Flyers ornaments on a memorial tree for his dad.

Nate Walters and his mom, Melissa, decorated a tree in memory of Melissa’s mother, Janet Duncan. They welcomed the public to take the candy canes that decorated the tree.

That was a reminder of good holiday memories with their loved ones.

“My parents were very big on lighting, very big on decorating,” Melissa Walters said.

The program is a fundraiser for the recreation committee. It recently helped fund the construction of a volleyball court in the park, and will go toward new Christmas lights for the town in the future.

It also featured food trucks and a candy cane hunt for kids.

The trees are lit every day from 5-11 p.m. They will remain up through Eastern Orthodox Christmas, Jan. 7.
