Boni retains Carbon clerk seat

Carbon County Clerk of Courts Tyra Boni won her bid for reelection, defeating challenger Sydney Wernett.

The race was a repeat of the results of May’s Republican primary.

With no Democrats seeking the position, Wernett became the party’s nominee based on write-in votes during the primary. The results were slightly closer than the primary, but Boni carried the race with over 53 percent of the vote.

The Clerk of Courts office is responsible for filing and maintaining the pledging and the records of all criminal proceedings. The clerk also sits in attendance at all sessions of criminal court to record sentences and dispositions and to complete defendant bills of cost. The clerk of courts will earn an annual salary of $66,346 in 2022 and have a 2% increase to $67,673 in 2023.

Boni said Tuesday night that she and her staff will continue to approach the job the same way they did during her first term.

“I look forward to another four years and continuing the mission I started - that’s working for the taxpayers of Carbon county,” Boni said.

Boni thanked voters for having the confidence in her to continue the work she started. She said she was proud to have cleared the workload left over from disgraced former Clerk William McGinley. In 2019, Boni defeated McGinley’s successor, Fran Heaney, by just 100 votes. At the time, there were still about 12 months of backlog left over from McGinley’s tenure.

“I’m thankful that they see our accomplishments, they see all the good we are bringing to this county, and they see I’m working for the voters,” she said.

While she was the Republican nominee, Boni did not get support from several members of the Carbon County Republican Committee, who instead endorsed Wernett. Boni acknowledged that the committee did not support its nominee, but she would not speculate about the reasons.

“Those who have not supported me, you have to ask them those questions. I’m honored to have the support I have had from my family and friends,” she said.

Wernett also weighed in on the election on her Facebook page.

The candidate thanked everyone for their support in her campaign; as well as to all the voters who voted for her on Tuesday.

“This experience has been an amazing journey and I’m not done yet,” she said.
