JT girls fall to Bethlehem Cath. in PKs

They played through 80 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes of scoreless soccer.

But in penalty kicks, fifth-seeded Bethlehem Catholic scored four times to gain a 1-0 victory over Jim Thorpe in Thursday night’s District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal contest that eliminated the Olympians from postseason play.

Teighan Boyle, Summer Hill, Makenzie Davis, and Emily Pepe all found the back of the net for the Hawks, while Nicole Carroll scored the only PK goal for Thorpe. That ended a grueling and physical contest that took two-and-a-half hours to complete.

Bethlehem Catholic (8-8-1) had the better of the play in the first half as Boyle and Hill rushed the net several times.

At the 28-minute mark, Jim Thorpe’s Kaila O’Conner’s attempt on a breakaway went wide left. Three minutes later, Kelli Hogarty’s shot was juggled, but saved by Beca goalie Gabby Amato.

Thorpe’s goalie, Olivia Rosenberger, was terrific in net. Within the final 14 minutes of the first half, she stopped Boyle twice on point blank shots, as well as Gabriella Mutis and Jianna Brown from right and left angles.

The second half was played mostly at midfield, but the Hawks’s Hill nearly scored with a left-foot blast that was headed for the left corner of the goal. But again, Rosenberger came up big.

With 30 seconds left, Carroll’s shot for Thorpe was saved by Amato.

“We battled the whole game,” said Jim Thorpe coach Tom Condly. “Despite the fact that they play big schools in the EPC, we knew we could play with them because our schedule was challenging too, with teams like Palmerton and Pottsvile.”

During the first 15-minute overtime, several collisions occurred with players going after the ball, and the clock was stopped three times for injuries from both teams.

Mutis was stopped by Rosenberger with two minutes gone in OT, and the sophomore Olympian goalkeeper stymied Boyle again at close range. With five minutes to go, Amato saved a shot by JT’s Lauren LeKites.

In the second overtime, LeKites had another opportunity, but her kick sailed over the top of the goal. That was the end of any more scoring threats, setting up the penalty kick outcome.

“We had a phenomenal season, and it was unfortunate that it had to end this way,” said Condly. “We graduate only two seniors, so next year we bring back a great bunch of players who will have a lot of big-game experience.”

SUPER SUB ... Rosenberger was filling in at the goalie position for Jim Thorpe and she literally kept her team in the game, stopping 13 shots by Bethlehem Catholic.

DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS ... The Olympians ended their season with a 10-8-1 record, and a fourth-place finish in Division 1 of the Schuylkill League.
