A woman who fired a firearm at state police is dead, after officers returned fire and struck her in an incident that happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday in Pocono Township.
State police out of the Hazleton barracks issued a press release providing the details of the incident, but the name of the woman has not been released. The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and state police continue to investigate the matter.
Police said at 10:57 p.m., troopers from the Stroudsburg barracks were requested by township police to assist with a vehicle pursuit along state Route 611. Police said after the vehicle became disabled in the northbound lane of the highway, just north of Shine Hill Road, the female and male occupants repeatedly refused to exit the vehicle or comply with officers’ commands to do so
As further commands were given to exit the vehicle, police said, it was determined the occupants had a firearm inside the vehicle.
Police said officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from the state police Special Emergency Response Team. Once on scene, SERT members established contact with the occupants and the man got out of the car, handing the firearm to the woman. The man was taken into custody.
Police said the woman then pointed the firearm and fired toward troopers on scene. Troopers returned fire, striking the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
