Gym’s haunted trail open for spooky thrills

In the daylight, walking the haunted trail outside Signature Training Academy in Brodheadsville is not so spooky with its blood-splattered doll heads, cemetery, spiderwebs, ghosts and ugly creatures hanging around.

That all changes as the sun goes down.

“When it gets dark around 7 p.m., it gets a whole lot scarier with strobe lights, fog machines and 15 to 20 volunteers dressed as scarers,” said Mike Erhardt, coordinator of the haunted trail and a wrestling coach at the gym.

The scarers jump out of caskets, are handcuffed to a tree, locked inside a cage, hide where least expected and rise from the dead.

In re-creating a scene from the horror movie “The Ring,” his daughter, Lily, climbs out of the well with messy hair covering her painted face.

There is a lab scene where his son, Matthew, is chopping up people with a chain saw.

Their mother, Christine Gallagher, did a lot of decorating from one end of the trail to the other.

“It’s a very diverse haunted attraction,” said AJ Hiller, owner of Signature Training Academy.

This is Hiller and Erhardt’s first time teaming up to host a haunted trail.

“I like all the holidays. I want to make it fun for the kids and do something for the community,” said Erhardt.

The path was already there, and they just had to make it a bit wider and build some steps at different spots to make it safer. The idea for the trail began during one of their business networking group sessions.

The trail is rugged and curvy at parts. Guests should be cautious while walking.

“It took about a month to put together and get the necessary permits and special event insurance,” Erhardt said.

They asked around for donations of certain props and decorations and ordered some items online. One of the dolls had been Lily’s, he said.

Proceeds from the trail will benefit high school and youth sports.

The scarers are mostly teenagers, and “they are scaring people a lot older than them,” Erhardt said.

Throughout the trail, which is about a third of a mile, there are re-created scenes from horror flicks such as “It,” “The Purge” and “The Ring.”

Even those who do not scare easily will likely scream when someone pops out of an unexpected place.

Near the exit, there is a giant toy box on one side and a horrific creature hanging from the tree.

“I heard one couple scream as they ran up the stairs and out of the trail,” Erhardt said.

The haunted trail will be open Oct. 22, 23, 29 and 30 from 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 31 is a rain date if needed.

The gym and trail are located at 137 Erin Lane, Brodheadsville. Admission is $25 per person.

“Readers can mention this article and get a $5 off coupon for admission,” Erhardt said.

Because of the scare factor, families with children under 12 should come during the first hour while it is still light out and the scarers are not as scary, Erhardt said.

It was open last weekend. Friday night had about 50 guests. It was rained out Saturday.

Concessions including coffee, hot chocolate, popcorn, beef jerky and candy are available.

Hiller and Erhardt already have ideas regarding how to decorate the trail for Christmas and include Santa and his reindeer in it.

That one will be festive, not haunting, they said.
