Dawgs’ Frame pummels PA

Matt Frame can impact a game in a number of ways.

He can deliver punishing blocks and be a disruptive defender.

Frame can also power an explosive offense out of the backfield and in the passing game.

The senior was at the center of Northern Lehigh’s 62-30 win over Pen Argyl last Friday.

Frame pulverized the Green Knights, rushing for 135 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Frame also caught a 13-yard touchdown from Dylan Smoyer in the first quarter.

The senior added a fourth rushing score in the second half, and finished with 155 yards on 11 carries.

It was another impressive effort for Frame, one that helped him earn Times News Football Player of the Week.

“It was just an overall fun night,” said Frame, who was also crowned Homecoming King at halftime. “Everything went well. We won the game by a very comfortable score, so everything came our way.”

Frame led the area in scoring a year ago with 14 touchdowns, and finished third in rushing.

He dedicated himself in the offseason to be even better this fall.

“I had a really strict offseason,” he said. “I started earlier than I normally have. I used to wrestle, and I didn’t wrestle this season so I started earlier. I lifted five days a week, and then I would train also on the field. I just did that all the way to the start of the season, and I can tell the difference with my running, strength, and it definitely helped out a lot.”

The Bulldogs (5-3) lead the area in total offense with 392.0 yards per game. They also have the area’s leading passer in Smoyer (1,264 yards), and receiver in Trevor Amorim (643 yards).

“Matt’s been patient; he’s been patient all year,” said Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout. “I think early on what we expected coming in was a lot of the teams, that was their focus; they really keyed on him. And we just kind of told him, and he understood that with what we have and the other players that we have that one week … things are going to break at some point.”

Northern Lehigh outgained Pen Argyl 304-92 in the first half. The Bulldogs finished with 537 yards of offense.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the first half, rolling to a 35-0 lead at the break.

As a team, Northern Lehigh ran for 376 yards.

Frame has 758 yards rushing this season, currently third in the area. His 12 touchdowns rank fourth.

The win over the Green Knights was the second in a row for the Bulldogs, who have only lost to Northwestern, Notre Dame Green Pond and North Schuylkill this season, teams that are a combined 22-1.

Those losses came by a combined 22 points.

“Matt understood that early on that things were going to open up,” said Tout. “And we’ve been throwing the ball, and that really opened things up and set up what we have. We know what we have. And as the weather gets a little bit colder here, you’re going to rely on the run game, and that was kind of the focus too. I just think our line has now progressed. We talked about having those defenses, and I think you can see that. I could see our guys now matching up against another 2A school (Pen Argyl) that we’re able to control the line of scrimmage and open things up for Matt.

“And he showed his versatility. Some runs up the middle, physical runs; some were speed runs outside. He caught the waggle pass that was really big for us. That would have been a nice stop for those guys. So he’s good catching the ball out of the backfield. He blocks well. We asked him to block as well, so he can do it all, he definitely can.”

Frame is a force to be reckoned with in all facets of the game.

His presence can be felt with or without the ball in his hands.

And with the postseason looming, that’s not about to change anytime soon.

“That maturity, that’s what we’re talking about,” said Tout. “They’re a fun group. We’ve got a group of gamers. I’m happy for Matt, because we expected him to have that breakout game, and I think we’re going to continue to see that.”
