Walnutport restaurant is planning to hit the road

Mr. Doggy Style Hotdog Shoppe is moving out of its location in Walnutport and hitting the road. The restaurant announced on Facebook this week that it is closing up shop this Wednesday.

“All around, we feel this is the best course for us at this time. It has been our pleasure to serve the wonderful people of this and surrounding towns, and we hope you will continue on this journey with us,” the post stated. … “Thank you all for your support over the past four years. This is not the end, this is a new beginning for us!”

Kristin Zellner, the restaurant manager, said in an interview that it would have been four years in October when the restaurant opened in its current location on Main Street. When COVID-19 hit, it put a crimp in their business, which hasn’t gotten easier.

Like many businesses, the restaurant has had a hard time getting employees, but that’s not the only problem, Zellner said. It’s been difficult to get supplies, and the cost of supplies has gone way up.

“It’s outrageous right now,” she said.

Fortunately, the owners bought a food trailer a couple years ago and have been renovating it and customizing it for the business ever since.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “They did a wonderful job.”

When the opportunity presented itself to go out to events in their food trailer, they took it.

“We have had many wonderful events lined up and great opportunities presented to us. We have decided to capitalize on this,” they stated on their Facebook page.

Two of those upcoming events are the Wheels of Time Annual Rod and Custom Car Jamboree Aug. 27-29 at Macungie Memorial Park and the Allentown Fair from Sept. 1-6. Starting Nov. 26, they will be at Becks’ Christmas Tree Farm in Slatington every weekend leading up to Christmas.

Their food menu will be pretty much the same as it was in the restaurant, Zellner said. They will continue to have their specialty hot dog sandwiches, kielbasa, cheesesteaks and burgers. The one thing that will go away are their French fries.

“You need a lot of storage to have them,” she said.

Eventually, the restaurant plans to park itself in a permanent location in the Walnutport area when not making the rounds to local events.

Zellner said they don’t want to announce their new site just yet, but will announce it in the next couple weeks. She just asks that their loyal patrons keep supporting them.

“We need them,” she said.
