Pleasant Valley Envirothon team places in international competition
Pleasant Valley High School Envirothon team won seventh place in the NCF-Envirothon International Competition held virtually in July, but hosted by Nebraska. There were 42 teams representing the United States, Canada and China.
The PVHS team members consisted of Emma Barrett, captain; Zachary Dooner; Reece Kresge; Ben Keppel and Jacob Possinger. They received $2,500 in scholarship money for their win.
On July 16, the students received a 26-page problem-solving scenario and they planned and presented a solution to the problem in front of a live panel of judges on July 27. Due to competition rules, the club adviser, Maricatherine Garr, was not able to provide feedback or assistance of any kind on the presentation.
“They truly did this on their own,” she said.
The students also spent weeks studying for the five tests that took place on July 26. At the international level, the tests focused heavily on Nebraska, since it was this year’s host state.
The topics covered were forestry, wildlife, soils, aquatics and current issue: water resources management.
Monroe County Conservation District staff and board were instrumental in coordinating the event, proctoring the tests, and providing all around support for the team.
“Educator Alesia Gallo was especially helpful, acting as our main proctor and liaison,” Garr said.
This is the highest placement that any Pleasant Valley or Monroe County team has achieved in the long history of Envirothon at PVHS.
“To say I am proud of this group of kids is a massive understatement. I never thought I’d have a team get to have this experience, as Pennsylvania is the most competitive state to try and win (since we have 67 counties and are the birthplace of Envirothon),” Garr said.
“And yet, they achieved it despite all the extra issues COVID brought, including forcing this online and out of the forest, soil and water that these kids love and adore. I’m sure people are going to get tired of hearing me talk about this, but I am over the moon for them.”
On behalf of the Pleasant Valley Board of Education, President Donna Yozwiak said, “This group of young scientists truly represents the quality that Pleasant Valley curriculum offers to its students. We are extremely happy with their accomplishments in the world arena, and we continue to be PV Proud.”
