Kids’ day a hit at fair
Sizable crowds continue to flood this year’s Carbon County Fair, a downpour not withstanding.
Despite a rainstorm, a good number of visitors still came to the 21st annual event along Little Gap Road in Palmerton on Tuesday.
Having overseen the event each year since its inception, fair President Robert Silliman has learned to weather the storm and continue to roll with the punches.
“We got hit pretty hard with the rainstorm that came through; it’s a good thing there was no lightning with it,” Silliman said. “It’s a weather-related business; you take your lumps with it.”
Silliman said he expects the high temperatures to dry up the ground in plenty of time before the event resumes later this afternoon.
“I know they have some heat alerts, so everybody has to be careful,” he said. “Overall, we’re very pleased; our attendance is up Monday and Tuesday.”
Silliman said there were a record number of kids Tuesday at the ride area with free wristbands, as St. Luke’s Health Network sponsored Children’s Day by covering the costs of children in the ride area for a wristband, which made the rides free for children 18 years and younger with the cost of a fair entry.
Performances included Rick K and the Allnighters With the Belle Tones on the main stage, and Wagstaff & Company on the midway. There was also a lumberjack contest in the arena, and children’s day drawing on the midway.
“We expect to have an incredible day today,” Silliman said. “We invite everybody out to come out and see your friends and neighbors; they will all be here.”
There is a $5 admission charge for everyone 6 years and older, and an additional fee of $6 for most arena events.
